Matadors Earn First Big West Win in Four Sets Over UC Riverside

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The trio of Britney Graff, Angela Hupp and Brittany Williams combined for 35 of Cal State Northridge's 50 kills as the Matadors notched their first conference win with an 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 victory over UC Riverside Saturday in The Matadome.

Hupp and Williams both led the way for Northridge (5-13, 1-4 Big West) with 12 kills as Williams hit .310 and Hupp .241. Williams also added a career-high two aces and four blocks while Hupp dished out 17 assists to go with seven digs and four blocks. Graff also reached double figures with 11 kills (.167) and completed the double-double effort by adding 10 digs. Sam Orlandini also had a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs and Tela Burnett added six kills (.333) and six digs. Libero Monica McFarland posted a match-high 18 digs for the Matadors who ended a five-match losing streak.

Northridge's hitting steadily improved as the match wore on as the Matadors hit .158 in the set one loss, but rebounded to hit .172 in set two, .281 in set three and .333 in the fourth and final set. Conversely, the Highlanders' hitting dropped as the match progressed. UCR hit .282 in winning set one, but were held to hitting clips of .103, .079 and .000 in the final three sets.

The Matadors trailed early 3-0 in the first set and ultimately dug themselves a 14-8 hole. Trailing 17-11, Northridge scored three straight points to close within 17-14 but UCR answered with a 5-0 run to take an insurmountable 22-14 lead.

Set two was tied 9-9 before the Matadors scored unanswered points to open up a 17-9 cushion. The Highlanders got as close as 18-13 after a Chelsea Johnson hitting error but would get no closer the remainder of the set.

Set three saw Northridge open up leads of 10-5 and 14-9 before UCR put together an 8-2 run to take its first lead (17-16) since 2-1. The teams traded sideouts until 18-18 when a Shelby LeDuff hitting error followed by a Hupp kill gave the Matadors a two-point lead. The Matadors held a slim one-point lead until a pair of Hupp kills, a Hupp-Burnett block and a McFarland ace capped a four-point run which wrapped up the set.

Northridge played catch-up for the first half of set four as UCR jumped out to a 5-2 lead. Five straight Matador points put Northridge back in front 7-5 but the Highlanders answered with three straight to wrestle back the lead 8-7. With the score tied 14-14, a pair of kills from Graff along with a Tonbarra Youpele hitting error gave the Matadors their largest lead at 17-14. Although UCR narrowed the gap to 17-16, Northridge staved off the run and ultimately went up 22-18 following a Williams kill. With the Highlanders serving on match point, Graff put away a Hupp assist and the Matadors notched their first conference win of the 2009 season.

Youpele and Bianca Endersby both had nine kills to lead the Highlanders who also got 28 assists and seven digs from Brittney Murrey and 16 digs from libero Katherine Castillo.

Cal State Northridge heads back out on the road for its next two matches begining next Friday, Oct. 16 at Cal State Fullerton.
