IRVINE, Calif. - After a tough five-set loss at UC Riverside on Friday, Cal State Northridge fell in straight sets 26-24, 26-24, 25-17 in a Big West match at UC Irvine on Saturday.
The loss is the fifth straight for the Matadors who slip to 7-19 overall and 3-9 in the Big West. The Anteaters improve to 19-6 overall and 8-4 in conference with the win.
Junior Lynda Morales was a bright spot for Northridge as she had a team-high 11 kills while hitting .318. Senior Angela Hupp added seven kills (.208), 17 assists and nine digs for the Matadors who hit just .118 as a team.
After trailing by as many as five (22-17) in the first set, Northridge engineered a 7-0 run to claim a 24-22 lead. With two chances to take the first set, a Kari Pestolesi kill followed by a block on Tela Burnett evened the set and propelled the Anteaters on a 4-0 wun which claimed the set.
UCI looked to have set two in hand at 13-6 but the Matadors continually chipped away at the lead and ultimately knotted the score at 23-23 following a Morales kill. Burnett's service error gave UCI set point at 24-23 but Chelsea Johnson forced extra points with a kill. But back-to-back Anteater kills ended any Northridge hope as the Matadors went down two sets to none.
Set three was close until 11-11 when UCI claimed eight of the next 10 points to open up a 19-13 advantage. The Matadors were able to get within five at 22-17 on a Hupp kill but three straight UCI points ended the match.
Julianne Piggott fired a match-high 18 kills for the Anteaters in the win.
Cal State Northridge returns home to open a two-match homestand which will wrap up the 2009 home schedule. The Matadors host Long Beach State on Friday, Nov. 13 before hosting Cal State Fullerton on Saturday for Senior Night.
