NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior night came and went for Cal State Northridge in one hour and 45 minutes as Cal State Fullerton dealt the Matadors a 26-24, 25-19, 25-18 loss on Saturday at The Matadome.
After an emotional five-set win over Big West-leading Long Beach State on Friday, Northridge (8-20, 4-10 Big West) fell in straight sets on Saturday as the Matadors honored seniors Angela Hupp and Tela Burnett prior to the match.
Burnett shined in her final home match as the middle blocker from Pleasant Grove, Utah tallied a team-high 11.5 points on six kills, nine block assists and one ace. Junior Lynda Morales had a team-high eight kills while hitting .353 but no other Matador hitter registered more than four kills on the night. Hupp produced 23 assists, nine digs, four blocks and three kills in her home finale and libero Monica McFarland had a match-high 15 digs.
The Matadors and Titans battled in a close first set. After the Titans opened up an early 9-5 lead, the Matadors used a 5-0 run to take their first lead at 10-9. Burnett had a hand in three blocks and also added a kill during the run. Fullerton wrestled back the lead on an Alex Wolnisty kill followed by a Wolnisty-Torrie Brown block and the Titans ultimately built the lead to 16-12. Trailing by four at 21-17, Northridge put together another five-point run, largely on Titan miscues, as the Matadors went back up by one at 22-21. The teams then traded sideouts until 24-24 when Fullerton used kills from Kayla Neto and a solo block from Erin Saddler to win 26-24.
The Matadors held close in the second set, trailing just 15-14 after a Hupp-Burnett block. But the Titans claimed five of the next six points to go up 20-15 on a kill from Jonny Hart. Northridge pulled to within two at 21-19 on a Burnett ace but the Matadors would get no closer.
With the score knotted 6-6 in the set three, the Titans engineered a 10-2 run to open up an insurmountable 16-8 lead. Northridge would get as close as three before Fullerton cruised to the 25-18 win.
Wolnisty (.318) and Saddler (.086) each had 10 kills to lead the Titans. Setter Andrea Ragan added a double-doouble with 37 assists and a team-high 11 digs.
Cal State Northridge wraps up the 2009 season next week as the Matadors travel to Cal Poly next Friday (Nov. 20) followed by the season-finale at UC Santa Barbara next Saturday (Nov. 21).
