BROOKLYN, NY - Former Cal State Northridge All-American Jennifer Fopma, along with teammate Brittany Hochevar, reached the final of the Women's $120,000 AVP Crocs Slam Lumber Liquidators Coney Island Open July 4.
Fopma, who led the Matadors to an NCAA Tournament berth in 2003, posted her best finish in five seasons on the AVP Tour. Playing alongside Hochevar, who played collegiately at Long Beach State, the seventh-seeded duo fell in the tournament final to the second seeded team of Dianne DeNecochea and Carrie Dodd in three sets (21-19, 17-21, 15-12).
Fopma/Hochevar defeated the team of Cindie Boosin/Tealle Hunkus (19-21, 21-15, 15-8) in their opening match before sweeping Heather Lowe/Nancy Mason 21-16, 21-18 in round two.
In round three, DeNecochea/Dodd (2) dealt Fopma/Hochevar a 15-21, 23-21, 15-9 setback dropping them into the lower round of the Contender's Bracket.
Facing a must-win in round four, Fopma/Hochevar defeated Claire D'Amore/Jennifer Snyder 21-13, 21-19 to move on to the fifth round where they defeated the ninth seeded team of Whitney Pavlik and Stacy Rouwenhorst 21-15, 21-17.
In round six, Fopma/Hochevar defeated eighth seeded Lauren Fendrick/Ashley Ivy in straight sets (21-18, 21-16) setting up a semifinal match against the third seeded team of Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan. Fopma posted 16 kills (.387) to go with seven digs as Fopma/Hochevar overcame a 21-14 set one loss to take the final two sets 21-18 and 16-14 to advance to the final.
The 2009 season has been Fopma's best on the AVP Tour as she has posted seven top-10 finishes, including one 2nd-place finish, one 5th-place finish, one 7th-place finish and four 9th-place finishes. She currently ranks 12th on the tour with 1,570.00 points.
At the most recent AVP stop in Manhattan Beach (July 16-19), Fopma/Hochevar (seeded sixth) advanced to the fifth round before being upset by Raquel Caulkins/Paula Roca i three sets (19-21, 21-16, 15-10).
The next stop on the 2009 AVP tour is the AVP Crocs Slam Bud Light Hermosa Beach Open Aug. 6-9.
