Matadors Fall to Fourth-Ranked Trojans 3-0 in USC Classic Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Sophomore Angela Hupp put down a team-high 10 kills and Siara Grayson came off the bench to post nine kills but fourth-ranked USC defeated Cal State Northridge 30-18, 30-22, 31-29 in the opening match of the USC Classic on Thursday at the Galen Center.

With the win, the Trojans remain unbeaten at 4-0 while the Matadors slip to 1-3.

Hupp wound up hitting .286 in the match while Northridge hit just .115 (36-22-122) as a team. Grayson came off the bench to provide an immediate boost hitting .421 on the night. Libero Amy Hultner posted a match-high 15 kills while Hupp nearly notched a triple-double by adding 12 assists and eight digs.

For USC, Kimmee Roleder knocked down a match-high 14 kills to go with four aces while Zoe Garrett also reached double figures in kills with 10. The Trojans committed just 14 hitting errors in the match on their way to a .322 (52-14-118) hitting clip.

In game one, the Matadors fell behind early 4-1, but battled back to take a 7-6 lead following a Diane Copenhagen hitting error. Northridge also led at 10-9 after an Alex Johnson ace. The biggest Matador lead of the game was two points at both 11-9 and 12-10. The Trojans took control of the game at 14-13 by putting together a 8-2 run to boost their lead to 22-15. The Matadors cut the lead to six but could get no closer falling in game one 30-18.

In the second game, Northridge held slim early leads, the last at 9-8 before USC got back-to-back kills from Roleder to take a 10-9 lead. The Trojans would never relinquish the lead from that point on and eventually boosted their lead to six points (23-17) following a Roleder ace. The Matadors got back-to-back kills from Johnson cutting the lead to eight (28-20) but the Trojans claimed game two 30-22.

Game three saw Northridge open up its biggest lead in the match at 15-9 following a Siara Grayson kill. The Matadors held at least a five-point lead until a 2-0 run capped by another Grayson kill put Northridge on top 18-11 forcing a USC timeout. Grayson continued her stellar play in the game with an ace giving the Matadors a 20-12 lead. Three straight USC points cut the lead to 20-15 forcing a Northridge timeout. The Trojans continued to cut into the Matador lead and a solo block from Roleder pulled USC within two at 23-21 forcing another Northridge timeout. The Trojans took their first lead of the game when a Katelyn Bishop solo block put USC on top 28-27. With the score tied 29-29, the Trojans used a Copenhagen kill and a block from Zoe Garrett and Taylor Carico to close the match 3-0.

Cal State Northridge will be back in action on Friday at 5 p.m. as the Matadors take on Mercer in their second match of the USC Classic at the Galen Center.
