MATADORS DEFEAT CAL STATE FULLERTON IN MARATHON MATCH, FALL AT LONG BEACH STATE
In a match that lasted nearly three hours, the freshmen duo of Brittany Williams and Alex Johnson combined for 44 kills as Cal State Northridge defeated Cal State Fullerton 26-30, 30-24, 34-36, 30-25, 20-18 on Oct. 2. Williams, who established a career-highs in kills with 16 the previous weekend, shattered that total with 24 kills in 70 swings against Fullerton. On Saturday, Oct. 6 Val Kepler and Williams each had a team-high seven kills but the Matadors saw their brief two-match win streak snapped in a 30-12, 30-22, 31-29 loss at Long Beach State.
CAREER RECORDS UPDATE
Junior setter Kayla Wright (Murrieta, CA/Murrieta Valley HS) is quickly closing in on fourth place on the Cal State Northridge career assists list. Wright, currently in fifth place with 1,921 career helpers, is now just 27 assists away from passing Heather Zall (1,947) and moving into fourth place. Fellow junior Val Kepler (Simi Valley/Royal HS) has also moved into the top 10 in career blocks with 251 block assists and 273 total blocks. Hultner has 788 career digs and is now 113 digs away from entering the all-time top 10 in that category.
RALLY SCORING ERA RECORDS LIST
The 2007 Matadors have firmly etched themselves in the Northridge rally scoring era record book. Last week the Matadors posted the sixth-best kills performance in a five-set match with 83 against Cal State Fullerton. Also against the Titans, Northridge had 99 digs (ranks ninth) and 24 block assists (ranks eighth). In a three-game match, the Matadors posted the sixth-best block assists effort with 23 against Long Beach State. Individually, Lynda Morales' 12 block assists against Fullerton is a rally era record for five games, Brittany Williams' 70 swings against Fullerton ranks fourth and Hultner's 31 digs also ranks fourth.
MATADORS LOOK TO IMPROVE ROAD RECORD
With matches at UC Davis and Pacific this week, the Matadors have a chance to improve on their 1-6 road record. Northridge's one and only road win came at UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 21. Among the teams the Matadors have played on the road this season are #8 Washington, #4 USC, Sacramento State, #18 San Diego, UCSB, #20 Cal Poly and Long Beach State who have a combined 85-33 (.720) record. Starting Friday at Davis, the Matadors will play four of their next six matches on the road to wrap up the month of October. The last match of the month, Oct. 27 at UC Irvine will be the second-to-last road match for Northridge this season with the final road match coming Nov. 17 at Cal State Fullerton.
KEPLER, MORALES MOVE UP IN BIG WEST
Kepler and redshirt freshman Lynda Morales (Bakersfield/Centennial HS) both moved up in the conference stats this week. Kepler ranks ninth this week in hitting percentage (.303) while Morales jumped from ninth to fifth in blocks (1.19). Hultner remains fifth in digs (4.66) while Wright is ninth in assists (6.54) and Angela Hupp is right behind in 10th (5.90).
Head coach Jeff Stork had this to say about last week's matches against Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State:
"It was an exciting match against Cal State Fullerton," said Stork. "It was a very good match, both teams played well, but you certainly want to win those close matches."
"As it turned out, some areas we did very well against Long Beach State," added Stork. "If we could have removed one rotation the results could have been different. We outblocked them which is a good accomplishment."
On road matches at UC Davis and Pacific this week:
"Davis has struggled this season and although Pacific has been up and down this year, they are much improved from last year," said Stork. "We cannot afford to take anyone lightly and we will prepare for both teams in an identical manner this week."
The Matadors' 1-1 start to October could propel Northridge to its first winning month this season. The Matadors finished 2-3 in August before posting a 3-8 record in September ... Tuesday's win over Cal State Fullerton gave Northridge consecutive wins for the first time this season ... Brittany Williams is averaging a team-high 3.43 kills per game in Big West play.
Eight Matador opponents (the most of any team in the Big West) are named in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll this week. UCLA (14-2) is the highest ranked Northridge opponent this week at No. 4. USC (14-2) is ranked sixth this week followed by eighth-ranked Washington (16-0). Duke (12-3) is ranked 13th this week followed by 17th-ranked San Diego (12-5). Cal Poly (8-6) ranks 24th this week while another Big West rival Long Beach State (9-5) and the Big Sky's Sacramento State (14-3) received votes in this week's top 25 poll.
