Irvine, Calif. – Cal State Northridge recorded its biggest victory of the 2012 season when the Matadors recorded a 10-7 decision over the University of Hawaii during Saturday afternoon play at the UC Irvine Invitational.
CSUN is ranked 17th nationally while Hawaii is ranked seventh.
The first half of competition was evenly played.
Cal State Northridge had led 2-1 and again at 3-2 in the first period, but Hawai'I tied the game on each occasion.
The game was tied 3-3 after the first period and again at halftime at 5-5.
In the third period, the close game continued. Hawaii scored to gain a 6-5 lead but shortly thereafter, CSUN's Marisa Young tallied her team-leading 20th goal of the year to tie the game at 6-6.
A short time later, Hawaii again pulled in front at 7-6, but back came CSUN when Heidi Pettinger pushed in her third goal of the game to make it 7-7.
Then Cal State Northridge took charge. Goals by Celena Photopulos and Ferriera gave CSUN a 9-7 lead at the end of the third period.
Then with around four minutes remaining in the game, Young scored her second goal of the game to give the Matadors their biggest lead of the game, 10-7.
Cal State Northridge is now 4-9. Hawaii fell to 2-6.
Earlier in the day, third-ranked UCLA scored early and often, and the Bruins' defense held Cal State Northridge in check in posting a 13-4 victory at the UC Irvine Invitational.
The Bruins jumped to a 2-0 first period lead and added another four goals in the second frame to take a 6-0 half time lead. UCLA then exploded for six more goals in the third period.
Cal State Northridge will continue play on Sunday at 9:15 a.m. against seventh-ranked UC Irvine. That game will be played at Corona Del Mar High School.
