#8 San Jose State Claims 10-9 Overtime Decision over #17 Cal State Northridge
Irvine, Calif. – Eighth-ranked San Jose State stormed back from a three-goal deficit in the fourth period to eventually earn a 10-9 double overtime decision over 17th-ranked Cal State Northridge during Sunday afternoon action at the UC Irvine Invitational.
The Spartans led 5-3 after one period of play, but the Matadors dominated play in the second and third periods. During that span, the Matadors out scored San Jose State, 5-0, to take an 8-5 lead heading into the final period of regulation.
But back came San Jose State to outscore Cal State Northridge, 4-1 in the final period. The game ended 9-9 in regulation play.
The Spartans scored the only goal in the first of two overtimes.
The victory raised SJS's season record to 8-7. Cal State Northridge fell to 4-11.
Jenny Jamison, Celena Photopulos and Marisa Young each scored two goals to lead the Matador attack.
Earlier in the day, seventh-ranked UC Irvine broke open a close game in the fourth period to earn a 10-5 victory over 17th-ranked Cal State Northridge at the UC Irvine Invitational.
The Anteaters led 2-1 after one period, 4-3 at halftime, and 7-5 after three periods of play. However, UC Irvine outscored he Matadors, 3-0, in the final frame for the five-goal victory.
It was the second straight victory by the Anteaters over the Matadors this year. Earlier this season at the UCSB Invitational, UCI scored a 9-4 decision over CSUN.
Jenny Jamison paced the Matador attack with two goals.
