San Diego, Calif. – It was a tough Saturday for the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge water polo team at the San Diego State Invitational.
The Matadors entered the tournament with a six-game winning streak and a #12 national ranking. But CSUN fell twice on Saturday. Cal State Northridge dropped a 5-4 upset decision to unranked Wagner College. Earlier in the day, the Matadors fell to 18th-ranked Princeton University of the Ivy League, 4-3.
Against Wagner College from Staten Island, New York, the Matadors held a 1-0 at the end of the first period, and a 2-1 edge at halftime.
But Wagner's defense held CSUN scoreless in the third period while scoring two goals of its own for a 3-2 lead entering the final period.
Both teams each scored twice for the 5-4 margin of victory for Wagner College.
Heidi Pettinger scored twice for Cal State Northridge.
Dana Harvey collected eleven saves for Cal State Northridge.
Against Princeton, the Matadors faced a Tiger team that had chalked up a 16-1 record with a #18 national ranking.
Both teams fought on even terms from start-to-finish, but Princeton prevailed in the end with a 4-3 victory over Cal State Northridge.
In a game marked by strong defensive play on both sides, Princeton held a 1-0 lead after the first period, but the Matadors evened the match at 1-1 at halftime.
Both teams each scored twice in the third period to knot the game at 3-3 entering the final stanza.
However, Princeton scored the only goal of the final period to earn the 4-3 verdict.
Freshman Marisa Young scored twice for the Matadors to increase her team-leading scoring lead to 40 goals. Jenny Jamison accounted for CSUN's other goal. Jamison is the second-leading scorer for CSUN with 37 goals.
Dana Harvey earned nine saves as CSUN's goalkeeper.
Tournament action for Cal State Northridge will continue in Sunday. At 11:45 a.m., the Matadors face eighth-ranked San Diego State followed by a 4:45 p.m. contest against Bucknell.
Despite the rainy, cold weather, the game will be played at the Aztec Aquaplex on the San Diego State campus.
