#17 Cal State Northridge Earns 10-3 Victory Over Cal Lutheran
Thousand Oaks, Calif. – Cal State Northridge head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi will be the first one to admit that Thursday's 10-3 victory at Cal Lutheran was not the most artistic or the best win of the season, but he'll take the verdict that gave the Matadors its second straight victory.
"We used this game to get the kinks out," said Leonardi. "This game also gave us an opportunity to play a lot of people heading into the tournament at Cal State Bakersfield and into the conference season next week."
This game was decided early. With the contest only more than two minutes old, Kelcie Ferriera took advantage of a mishandled ball by Cal Lutheran to sail a shot past the CLU goalie to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. A minute later, the rout was on as Marisa Young added her team-leading 45th goal of the season, followed by three more goals by Molly Henehan, Jenny Jamison and Jessica Goforth to give Cal State Northridge a 5-0 first period lead.
It was 6-1 at halftime, and the lead gradually increased in the second half.
Leonardi emptied his bench in the second half to give the Matadors valuable playing time.
Melissa Doll and Molly Henehan each scored two goals for Cal State Northridge. Eight different CSUN players scored at least one goal.
The victory increased CSUN's record to 12-14. Cal Lutheran fell to 12-7.
The Matadors now travel to the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday (3/24/12) at Cal State Bakersfield. At 9:40 a.m., CSUN faces Brown University from the Ivy League followed by a 2:05 p.m. contest against La Verne.
