Santa Barbara, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara jumped to a 2-0 first period lead and held on to post a 5-3 victory over 17th-ranked Cal State Northridge in a Big West Conference game on Saturday morning at UCSB's Campus Pool.
Shelby Haroldson scored the first of two goals for the Gauchos at 6:38 of the first period to give UCSB a 1-0 lead. Twenty-two seconds later, Katie Zakula added UCSB's second goal of the game.
CSUN's Melissa Doll cut UCSB's margin to 2-1 with her 27th goal of the year at 3:21 of the second period.
The score remained 2-1 in favor of UC Santa Barbara at halftime.
UCSB scored two goals in the first four minutes of the third period to take a 4-1 lead.
Back came Cal State Northridge with two straight goals including Lindsy Nelson's second goal of the game with 6:16 to play. That made the score 4-3 in favor of UCSB.
But UC Santa Barbara iced the game with 2:12 remaining the game on a goal by Kacey Creek, her second of the game.
The loss dropped Cal State Northridge to 15-16 overall and 1-2 in the Big West Conference. UC Santa Barbara is now 17-12 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
On Saturday afternoon, Cal State Northridge was upset by #19 Cal Baptist, 9-8, in a non-league game at UCSB's Campus Pool. Cal Baptist has been in an upset mood. On Friday night in San Diego, the Lancers beat #18 UC San Diego, 11-8. Earlier in the evening, Cal Baptist just fell short, 4-2, to ninth-ranked San Diego State.
The CSUN-CBU game was close throughout. It was 2-2 after the first period, 5-4 in favor of Cal State Northridge at halftime, and tied 8-8 at the conclusion of the third period. However, Cal Baptist scored the only goal of the fourth period by Laura Kocsis. The winning goal came with 5:16 remaining in the contest.
