Northridge, Calif. – Thirteen Matador players scored at least one goal as 19th-ranked Cal State Northridge stormed to a 22-7 victory over La Verne in the home finale on Sunday afternoon at Matador Pool.
The 22 goals was a single game high for the Matadors in 2012.
Marisa Young led the Matador assault with four goals. In all, six CSUN players totaled two goals or more.
Fifteen of the team's 22 goals came in the second and third periods.
The victory raised CSUN's season record to 17-19. La Verne fell to 9-20.
In the four years that Dana Harvey has played collegiate water polo, her parents Mark and Jill Harvey, had never seen their daughter play in the United States.
There is a simple reason.
Harvey, a senior goalkeeper for the Matadors, hails from Auckland, New Zealand, where her parents live year round.
That was until today when Mark and Jill Harvey made the 12-hour, 12,000 mile flight from New Zealand to Southern California to FINALLY watch her daughter play, in person, in a collegiate water polo game.
Dana Harvey didn't disappoint.
Harvey collected eight saves to help 19th ranked Cal State Northridge record a convincing 21-8 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in a non-league game on Sunday morning at Matador Pool.
"This was so exciting to see Dana play in person in the United States," said Dana's mother (Jill), who will be staying in the Southern California area for the next five weeks.
Dana Harvey agreed, who began her collegiate career at Arizona State for two seasons and transferred to Cal State Northridge for her junior and senior campaigns.
"This was fantastic to have my parents here at the game," beamed Harvey. "This was a game I was looking forward with my parents cheering for me in the bleachers. We won. It's been a great day."
Harvey and her parents were part of the annual Senior Day ceremonies before the game. Also honored were Matador seniors Jessica Goforth and Heidi Pettinger. The parents, family and friends were also in attendance for Goforth and Pettinger as well.
An enthusiastic crowd cheered the three seniors for their efforts in the pool and in the classroom. All three seniors are Academic All-Americans.
Head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi used his entire team roster, Eleven players scored at least one goal including Lindsy Nelson, who tallied five goals while Jenny Jamison and Melissa Doll each added three goals.
