Northridge, Calif. – The Cal State Northridge water polo team hits the road this weekend (February 9-10) as the Matadors play four games in two days at the UC San Diego Invitational.
The Matadors begin the tournament on Saturday (9:45 am) against Hartwick. Both teams are ranked 17th in the nation.
The winner of the CSUN/Hartwick game will play at 3:10 pm on Saturday against either second-ranked USC or Cal State East Bay. That game will be played at 8:30 am. The losers of each game will play at 1:50 pm.
The two CSUN games on Saturday will be played at the Canyonview Pool. Ten of the 16 teams in the tournament are nationally-ranked including #2 USC, #5 Arizona State, #6 UC Irvine, #7 San Diego State, and #9 Hawai'i.
Three of the Top six scorers in the Big West Conference are from Cal State Northridge. Lindsy Nelson, Jenny Jamison and Marisa Young are ranked fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the conference. Nelson leads Matador scorers with 17 goals followed by Jamison and Young with 15 goals apiece. Amber Pezzolla (SDSU) and Monika Eggens (Hawai'i) are atop the conference with 19 goals each.
Kiernan Davis is third in the Big West Conference with 58 saves (9.14 svpg). The league leader is Michele Relton (Pacific) with 94 saves (11.75 svpg).
Seven of the eight schools that play women's water polo in the Big West Conference are nationally-ranked … UC Irvine is ranked sixth followed by San Diego State (7th), Hawai'I (9th), UC Davis (13th), UC Santa Barbara (13th), Pacific (16th) and Cal State Northridge (17th).
