CSUN Defeats Hartwick, 13-12; CSUN To Face #2 USC

La Jolla, Calif. – Cal State Northridge fought back from a two-goal deficit in the final 3:58 of the game to post a 13-12 victory over Hartwick College (Onenota, NY) in first round play at the UCSD Invitational.

The victory sets up one of the biggest games in recent Matador history when CSUN faces one of the elite collegiate women's water polo teams in the nation, the second-ranked USC Trojans on Saturday afternoon (3:10 pm) at UCSD's Canyonview Pool.

After the first period ended at 3-3, the Matadors outscored the Hawks, 5-2, in the second stanza to take an 8-5 halftime lead. Four different Matador players scored at least one goal in the second period. Jenny Jamison led CSUN in the second period with two goals.

CSUN led, 9-7, after three periods, but Hartwick scored four straight goals to take an 11-9 lead with 3:58 to play.

Lindsy Nelson scored one of her team-leading four goals at 3:32 to cut the Hawks lead to one goal, 11-10. One minute later, Melissa Doll tied the game at 11-11.

CSUN took a 12-11 lead with 2:02 to play on a Marisa Young goal. Hartwick then tied the game with 55 seconds left.

Then with 24 seconds to play, Katie Kammer fired a shot past the Hartwick goalkeeper for the CSUN game winner, 13-12.

Cal State Northridge is 7-1.

What is so special about USC? The Trojans have advanced to the NCAA championship game four of the last five years. That includes an NCAA title in 2010. In 2011, the Trojans finished the year 23-6, but lost in the national championship game, 6-4, to Stanford University.

The Trojans opened their 2013 season in first round play at the UCSD Invitational with an easy 26-4 victory over Cal State East Bay.
