Cal State Northridge Hosts Bucknell, Occidental

Northridge, Calif. – Another busy week for the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team.

The Matadors, ranked 13th in the nation, will host Bucknell and Occidental on Thursday (3/4/13) before traveling to the San Diego State Invitational on Saturday (3/16/13) and Sunday (3/17/13).

CSUN will face Bucknell at 2:00 pm and Occidental at 7:00 pm. At the San Diego State Invitational, CSUN will face UC San Diego on Saturday (3/16/13) at 9:15 am followed by a 1:00 pm encounter against Princeton. On Sunday (3/17/13), Cal State Northridge will have a rematch against Bucknell (9:15 am) followed by a game against Indiana (12:30 pm).

CSUN's top three scorers are among the Top 10 scorers in the Big West Conference. Lindsy Nelson is fourth in the conference with a team-leading 41 goals (2.16 gpg) followed by Marisa Young and Jenny Jamison with 30 and 27 goals, respectively. Jamison and Young's stats are eighth and ninth, respectively, in the league.

Kiernan Davis has 152 saves (8.79 spg), fourth-best in the conference.

Cal State Northridge junior attacker Lindsy Nelson has been selected the Big West Women's Water Player of the Week as she carried the Matador offense to a 1-1 split last weekend against nationally-ranked opponents.

Nelson scored a combined seven goals in an 11-10 win over #13 UC Davis, and a 9-8 loss to seventh-ranked San Diego State. Nelson scored the seven goals in an efficient ten attempts for a .700 shooting percentage.

Against the Aggies, Nelson recorded three goals to go along with one assist, one steal and one field block.

Nelson helped the Matadors pull off the near upset of the Aztecs with a game-high four goals (in six attempts) while adding two field blocks, one assist and one steal.

Matador Memo …

All eight water polo teams in the conference are nationally-ranked … That includes #6 UC Irvine, #7 San Diego State, #8 Hawaii, #9 Long Beach State, #13 Cal State Northridge, #15 UC Santa Barbara, #16 UC Davis and #20 Pacific … CSUN started the year ranked 16th in the nation followed by three straight weeks ranked 17th … The current ranking of 13th for CSUN is its highest ranking this year … Previous to this week, CSUN had been ranked 15th nationally for four straight weeks … UC Irvine will host this season's Big West Tournament on April 26-28.
