Kelcie Ferreira’s Four Goals Propel CSUN to 13-9 Victory Over UCSB
Northridge, Ca. – On a hot Friday afternoon with temperatures hovering in the mid-80's, CSUN's Kelcie Ferreira fueled 14th-ranked Cal State Northridge to an impressive 13-9 victory over 16th-ranked UC Santa Barbara in a tense Big West Conference women's water polo game before an overflow crowd at Matador Pool.
In a span of less than two minutes early in the fourth period, Ferreira couldn't be stopped by UCSB's defense. During that short span, Ferreira scored three of her four goals in the game to give the Matadors a 13-9 lead.
Each time UCSB mounted a rally, Cal State Northridge stifled the Gauchos' momentum with its own rally.
Cal State Northridge mounted a 5-2 lead on a Marisa Young goal with 6:04 left on the second period clock. But two goals by UCSB's Samantha Murphy cut the margin to one goal at 5-4. CSUN stopped the Gauchos rally with two goals of its own by Ferreira and Molly Henehan to give the Matadors a 7-4 lead at halftime.
A Gaucho goal by Rachel Nelson early in the third period (7:40) cut the Matadors lead to 7-5, but 37 seconds later Lindsy Nelson scored for CSUN to make it 8-5.
UCSB mounted another comeback when Kacey Creek scored twice at the 6:38 and 6:01 marks of the third period to make it 8-7 CSUN. Cal State Northridge refused to fold as Nelson added her four goal of the game to up the Matadors lead to 9-7 with 2:59 left on the third period clock.
UCSB scored another goal to cut the Matador lead to one goal, 9-8, at the 1:54 mark of the third period. Back came the Matadors as Jenny Jamison scored with 1:30 left in period three. The score now read 10-8 in favor of the Matadors heading into the final period.
Ferreira then worked her magic in the fourth period. Ferreira goals at the 7:40, 6:35, and 5:49 marks gave the Matadors a 13-9 lead the Gauchos couldn't cut into.
Ferreira and Nelson each scored four goals for the Matadors. CSUN is now 21-11 overall and 3-4 in the Big West Conference. UC Santa Barbara fell to 19-12 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
