#10 Long Beach State’s Defense Stifles #14 CSUN, 8-2

Irvine, Ca. – Cal State Northridge ran into the rock-solid defensive wall of tenth-ranked Long Beach State as the 49ers recorded an 8-2 victory over the Matadors in a quarterfinal game on Friday afternoon at the Big West Tournament at the UC Irvine Aquatics Complex.

CSUN was held scoreless until Jenny Jamison scored with 7:18 remaining in the game. Until that time, the Matadors could not penetrate a 49er defense that stopped several good scoring opportunities. Kelly Ringel, the Long Beach State goalie, recorded 16 saves to help raise the Long Beach State season record to 24-6.

Leah Janke scored CSUN's other goal with 38 seconds remaining.

Long Beach State shutout CSUN in the first half, but the Matadors held its own. At halftime, the 49ers only held a 2-0 lead.

But in the third period, Long Beach State outscored CSUN, 3-0, to take a 5-0 lead.
