Irvine, Ca. – Tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge completed play on Sunday afternoon in the UCI Invitational with a 9-7 victory over 13th-ranked UC San Diego.
Molly Henehan scored a career-high four goals to propel the Matadors to the 100th career victory for Dr. Marcelo Leonardi, who is in his fifth season as head coach at CSUN.
"When I think about win #100, I think about all the quality people throughout the journey that helped this program reach the 100 wins … all the student-athletes, parents, family and friends," said Leonardi. "Thank you."
In his four previous seasons at CSUN, Dr. Leonardi has directed each team to a national ranking along with 28 wins in 2010, 21 wins in 2011, 19 wins in 2012 and 23 wins in 2013.
UCSD held a 3-2 lead after the first period, and a 5-4 advantage at halftime. The Matadors' offense and defense hit their stride in the third period outscoring the Tritons 3-0 thanks to goals by Kelcie Ferreira, Henehan and Jenny Jamison.
The three Matadors goals helped CSUN build a 7-5 lead after three periods, but UC San Diego refused to fold. A Triton goal in the fourth period cut the CSUN margin to one goal, 7-6, but Melissa Doll scored a goal to give the Matadors an 8-6 lead. UCSD scored to again cut the CSUN margin to only one goal, 8-7. But late in the fourth period, Marisa Young sailed a spin shot past the UCSD goalkeeper to seal the 9-7 victory.
Kiernan Davis collected a season-high 12 saves against UC San Diego.
Cal State Northridge finished the tournament with a 2-2 record. The Matadors are 9-5 on the season.
A bright sunny day for women's water polo and two of the best teams in the nation kicked off second day play on Sunday morning (8:00 am) when tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge faced fifth-ranked UC Irvine.
Despite a 3-1 lead for the Matadors in the second period, UC Irvine fought back to earn a 7-6 overtime decision.
Lindsy Duncan, Molly Henehan and Celena Photopulos pushed the Matadors to a strong start. Duncan and Henehan each scored in the first period while Photopulos added a goal in the second period for the two-goal CSUN lead.
Cal State Northridge led at halftime 3-2.
Marisa Young's goalie off the hand of the UCI goalie gave the Matadors a 5-3 lead in the third period. But Anteater goals by Jessy Cardey and Destene Albers tied the game at 5-5 entering the final period.
A backhand goal by McKenna Mitchell gave UC Irvine its first lead of the game, 6-5, in the fourth period. However, with 3:58 to play, Duncan scored her second goal of the game to tie the contest at 6-6.
Neither team could score in the final four minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime.
There were no goals for either team in the first overtime.
An outlet pass to Albers led to an open Mitchell on the side of the cage to give the Anteaters the only goal of the second overtime and the 7-6 win.
Cal State Northridge had a pair of chances with less than 24 seconds to play, but couldn't convert.
