Dramatic Comeback Gives CSUN a 9-8 Double Overtime Decision over Hawai’i

Northridge, Ca. – "Never Say Die" … "Never Give Up"

Tired, old phrases but those quotes certainly apply to CSUN's highly dramatic, nail-biting, heart-throbbing, highly-stressful 9-8 double overtime victory over the University of Hawai'i in a Big West Conference women's water polo game on Friday afternoon at Matador Pool.

The Rainbow Wahine, ranked ninth in the nation, led the seventh-ranked Matadors the entire game including an 8-5 lead with 7:21 to play in the fourth period.

No problem. Cal State Northridge went to work.

Celena Photopulos looped a shot over the head of the UH goalie to cut the Rainbow Wahine lead to 8-6 with 3:04 on the clock. Then with only 1:12 to play, CSUN scored again, this time on a Kelcie Ferreira goal who would eventually score the game winner in the second overtime.

Despite Ferreira's goal, Hawai'i led, 8-7. No problem. The Matadors marched back. With only two seconds remaining in regulation, Melissa Doll fired a shot past the Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper to tie the game, 8-8.

UH's last second shot with two seconds in regulation went nowhere.

Overtime … Cal State Northridge 8, Hawai'i 8.

Excellent defense on both sides prevailed in the first overtime.

In the second overtime, defense again prevailed until the scoreboard had 41 seconds remaining. Ferreira fired home the winning goal to give the Matadors the come-from-behind 9-8 decision.

Cal State Northridge raised its record to 21-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Hawai'i fell to 13-9 overall and 1-2 in league play.
