Ann Arbor, Mi - The 14th ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team dropped both games during first day action on Saturday at the Michigan Invitational.
In the first game of the day and the season opener for the Matadors, Cal State Northridge dropped a 11-10 decision to seventh-ranked San Jose State.
After leading at halftime, 5-4, the Matadors were outscored by one goal (3-2) in the third period to send the game to the fourth period tied at 7-7.
But Cal State Northridge could not stop San Jose State's offensive attack in the final period. The Spartans scored four goals compared to three for CSUN.
The Matadors featured a balanced attack with six Matador players finding the scoring column. Chelsea Curran tallied three goals to lead the CSUN attack. Jessica Coy and Alison Pierce each added two goals.
Jillian Stapf recorded 19 saves, one short of her career-record set last year against Cal State San Bernardino and two years ago against UC Santa Barbara.
In the second game of the day, eighth-ranked Arizona State scored a one goal decision over the Matadors, 10-9.
The Matadors held a 3-2 after the first period, and a 6-5 halftime advantage.
On Sunday, the Matadors will face Indiana (9:05 a.m.) and later in the day, the fifth-ranked Golden Bears of California (1:25 p.m.).
