Ninth-ranked Cal State Northridge Falls To Seventh-Ranked Loyola Marymount, 8-4

Irvine, Calif. - Seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount dominated play in the second, third and fourth periods to record an 8-4 victory over ninth-ranked Cal State Northridge during Sunday afternoon action at the prestigious UC Invitational.
The LMU victory gave the Lions a ninth-place finish in the 16-team field while the Matadors ended up tenth. CSUN finished the two-day tournament, 2-2. CSUN beat 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara (10-6) and UC San Diego (12-7), but fell to eighth-ranked Arizona State (4-14) and Loyola Marymount (4-8).
The Matadors enjoyed a 1-0 lead after the first period, but the Lions dominated play the rest of the way. LMU out scored CSUN, 3-1, 3-1, 2-1, in the next three periods.
On Sunday morning, Sydney Sonoda scored three goals to pace the Matadors to a 10-6 victory over 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara.
In the four games at the UCI Invitational, Sonoda led CSUN scorers with seven goals to give her 27 for the season, one behind team leader Whitney Delgado.
On Saturday, Sonoda scored three goals to help CSUN to a 12-7 victory over UC San Diego. Earlier in the day, Sonoda scored a goal against eighth-ranked Arizona State.
Balanced scoring helped pave the way to the Sunday morning victory against UCSB. Six CSUN players scored at least one goal.
Cal State Northridge broke open a close game outscoring the Gauchos, 4-1, in the second period to take a 7-3 halftime lead. It was 9-4 after three periods.
Cal State Northridge, 11-4, will continue tournament play at the Cal Lutheran Invitational next weekend (Mar. 6-7).
