Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge gave it a good effort, but the tenth-ranked Matadors fell to sixth-ranked Arizona State during Saturday morning play at the Cal Lutheran Invitational.
Whitney Delgado, who entered the game with a team-leading 27 goals, scored a career-high six goals.
Cal State Northridge kept it close compared to ASU's drubbing of CSUN, 14-4, at last weekend's UC Irvine Invitational. This time, the Matadors trailed only 2-1 after one period, 6-4 at halftime, and 9-6 after three periods. Cal State Northridge outscored the Sun Devils, 2-1, in the final frame.
Later today, Cal State Northridge meets Cal Lutheran at 12:15 p.m. at the CLU pool, and finishes the day with a 4:00 p.m. contest against Pomona Pitzer College at Orange Christian High School.
Delgado's six goals give her 33 for the season, a team-high. Delgado, only a sophomore, has scored at least one goal in 15 of the team's 16 games.
Cal State Northridge is now 11-5.
