Whitney Delgado Scores 13 goals in three games at Cal Lutheran Invitational

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Whitney Delgado is just a sophomore, but is scoring goals like a seasoned veteran.

Delgado scored three goals in the final game of three on Saturday afternoon for the tenth-ranked Matadors women's water polo team to help Cal State Northridge to a 12-5 drubbing of Pomona Pitzer College at the Cal Lutheran Invitational.

The Matadors jumped to a 6-1 first period lead, and raised the margin to seven goals at halftime, 9-2.

Sabrina Anonas added two goals to give the Matadors a 13-5 season record.

Senior All-American goalkeeper Jillian Stapf collected 12 saves.

The Matadors chalked up a 2-1 record during Saturday's action.. Earlier in the day, the Matadors scored an 11-1 decision over Cal Lutheran, but lost the day's first game, a 10-8 verdict to sixth-ranked Arizona State.

Cal State Northridge gave it a good effort, but the Matadors fell to sixth-ranked Arizona State. Delgado scored a career-high six goals.

Cal State Northridge kept it close compared to ASU's drubbing of CSUN, 14-4, at last weekend's UC Irvine Invitational. This time, the Matadors trailed only 2-1 after one period, 6-4 at halftime, and 9-6 after three periods. Cal State Northridge outscored the Sun Devils, 2-1, in the final frame.

In the second game of the day, Delgado continued to dominate the scoring table for Cal State Northridge. Delgado scored a game-high four goals to lead the Matadors to an 11-1 victory over Cal Lutheran.

The Matadors led 2-1 after the first period, but then scored ten straight goals over the next three periods to earn the victory.

Delgado, who has scored at least one goal in 17 of the 18 games, has a team-leading 40 goals this year.

Cal State Northridge continues play on Sunday two more games. At 11:00 a.m., the Matadors face Villanova at Oaks Christian High School. Then at 5:15 p.m., Cal State Northridge faces Penn State Behrend.
