Tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge Beats Long Beach State, 11-4, in Big West opener
March 27, 2010
Northridge, Calif. - Tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge spotted Long Beach State a quick 3-0 lead in the first period. Then the Matadors got their offensive attack in gear and scored eight straight goals en route to an 11-4 victory over the 49ers in the Big West Conference women's water polo opener for both schools.
Long Beach State goals by Melissa Matheson, Courtney Elward and Katie Rogers gave the visitors a sizable lead with 1:47 left in the first period.
But eight straight goals from the 1:36 mark of the first period to three seconds left in the third period gave the Matadors a five-goal margin (8-3). Four of the goals were scored by two players, Whitney Delgado and Heidi Pettinger. Pettinger added a game-high third goal with four minutes remaining to help the Matadors win their 20th game of the season against five losses.
The 20 wins is the third time in the nine-year history of Cal State Northridge women's water polo that the team has chalked up 20 wins or more.
CSUN's defense also played a major role in the win. After the three straight 49er goals in the first period, Matador defenders didn't allow a LBS goal until 7:04 remaining in the game.
Senior All-American goalkeeper Jillian Stapf had eleven saves. In ten games this year, Stapf has collected ten or more saves.
Cal State Northridge hosts UC Irvine on Friday, April 2, at 3 p.m. at Matador Pool.
Whitney Delgado's two goals against Long Beach State gives her 53 for the season to move her into a sixth place tie in the CSUN record book with Chari Christopher (2003) and Pam Barba (2004) ... Three assists by Kirra Kylander gives her 49 for the season, fourth-best in school record.
