Northridge, Calif. - Heidi Pettinger scored a career-high five goals to lead the 17th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team to a 10-9 victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday afternoon at Matador Pool.
The Coyotes led 3-2 with 3:05 to play in the first period but Pettinger put the Matadors to stay in front with goals at the 2:51 and 1:18 marks to make it 4-3.
With Cal State Northridge in front, 6-5, Pettinger increased the CSUN margin to 7-5 at the 7:37 mark of the third period, and later added her fourth goal of the game to make it 9-6.
Cal State San Bernardino marched to within one goal at 9-8 after three periods. But with 3:13 remaining in the game, Pettinger added what proved to be the winning goal to make it 10-8. The Coyotes added a late goal to make the final score 10-9 in favor of Cal State Northridge.
Pettinger's previous scoring bests were four goals in games against Concordia, Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara earlier this year.
Cal State Northridge increased its season record to 19-11 while Cal State San Bernardino fell to 9-23.
The Matadors will meet conference rival UC Santa Barbara next Saturday (4/9) in a noon tipoff at Matador Pool. Both teams are atop the Big West Conference standings with 2-0 records.

Heidi Pettinger scored eleven goals in the weekend wins over UC Davis (14-13, 4/2/11), Pacific (11-9, 4/3/11) and Cal State Bernardino (10-9, 4/3/11) ... That gives Pettinger 95 career goals, which moves her into a ninth place tie with Chelsea Curran (95, 2007-) in the CSUN Top 10 record book ... Pettinger's 54 goals this year are eighth-best for a single season in school history ... Whitney Delgado's five goals in three games this weekend gives her a league-leading 66 goals which is fourth-best for a single season in school history ... Delgado holds the single season school record with 80 goals set last year.

Earlier in the day, Leah Janke scored a career-high four goals to help lead 17th-ranked Cal State Northridge to an 11-9 come-from-behind victory over 18th-ranked Pacific in a Big West Conference women's water polo game on Sunday afternoon at Matador Pool.
With 4:04 left in the first period, Pacific had jumped to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Bethany Quertermous and Allison King.
Pacific extended the lead to three goals with a 6-3 lead with 55 seconds left before intermission. Mandy King scored twice and Quertermous added a goal to help the UOP attack.
But Janke kept Cal State Northridge close with two goals with less than three minutes before halftime to cut the Tiger lead to two goals, 6-4. Janke's second goal came with only 13 seconds left before intermission.
Cal State Northridge exploded for six goals in the third period while holding UOP to only one goal. The Matadors started the offensive assault with four straight goals from the 7:33 mark to the 1:30 mark of the third period to take an 8-6 lead. Janke scored two of those four goals.
Cal State Northridge ended the third period with a 10-7 lead, its biggest lead of the game.
Back came Pacific with goals by Quertermous (her fourth goal of the game) and Mandy King (her third goal of the game).
However, freshman Lindsy Nelson added an insurance goal with 3:19 remaining to give the Matadors an 11-9 that eventually was the final score.
Dana Harvey collected 12 saves for Cal State Northridge.
Cal State Northridge raised its season record to 18-11 and 2-0 in the Big West Conference. Pacific fell to 16-10 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
