Santa Barbara, Calif. - As expected, the clash between tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge and 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon was expected to be close.
And close it was. Each team traded goals in the first period with the game knotted at 2-2.
The next frame saw the Gauchos outscore the Matadors, 2-1, to take a 4-3 halftime lead.
It wasn't until the 5:44 mark of the third period that the Matadors tied the game at 4-4 on a penalty shot. However, with eight seconds remaining in the third period, UCSB found the back of the Matador net to take a 5-4, lead going into the final frame.
Cal State Northridge evened the game at 5-5 midway through the fourth period.
With 1:26 left in regulation, UCSB again score to take a one-goal lead at 6-5. Again Cal State Northridge fought back with a tying goal 32 seconds later by Kristin McLaughlin.
Later in the game with the score tied at 6-6, Cal State Northridge went on the attack and with 20 seconds remaining on the clock, UCSB fouled Sydney Sonoda on a 5-meter penalty. The Matadors responded with a penalty shot goal by Whitney Delgado. The winning goal gave Cal State Northridge a 7-6 victory over the Gauchos in a battle of first place teams in the Big West Conference.
