Cal State Northridge Falls at Big West Tournament Championship, 12-11

April 25, 2010

Long Beach, Calif. - For the second straight year, UC Irvine has captured the Big West Tournament championship.

Cal State Northridge, seeded second in the league tournament championship, fell to the fourth-seeded Anteaters in the title game on Sunday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool at Long Beach State.

UC Irvine, which had entered the tournament with only a 12-14 overall record, had to win three games in three days and that is exactly what they did including Sunday's win over the favored Matadors.

Whitney Delgado, who set a single season school record with 80 goals, scored five goals against the Anteaters but it just wasn't enough to pull the Matadors to victory.

UC Irvine jumped to a 4-1 lead with 47 seconds left in the first period, and ended the period with a 5-2 lead. UCI's Erin Kiene and Cortney Collyer scored four of UCI's five goals in the first period. Delgado and Heidi Pettinger kept CSUN close with two first period goals.

Cal State Northridge changed the momentum in the second period. Again, Delgado led a quartet of Matador scorers with two goals as CSUN cut the UC Irvine margin to one goal, 8-7, at halftime.

Cal State Northridge finally tied the game (8-8) thanks to a penalty shot goal by Delgado with 4:28 remaining in the third period. But UC Irvine mounted its own comeback. Cortney Collyer scored on back-to-back goals at 3:23 and 1:57 to give UCI a 10-8 cushion. Kat Plummer scored her only goal of the game just 38 seconds into the fourth period to push the UCI advantage to 11-8.

Again, Delgado wouldn't allow CSUN to fold. Delgado's fifth game of the game with 5:29 left in the game pushed the Matadors to within two goals at 11-9. But UCI's Jessy Cardey scored would proved to be the game-winner with a goal to the lower right corner of the Matador net. That gave UC Irvine a 12-9 lead.

Kristin McLaughlin's goal with 1:18 remaining in the game trimmed the UCI lead to 12-10 with 1:18 to play, and Alison Pierce found the back of the net with seven seconds left on the clock.

But victory wasn't on CSUN's side ... UC Irvine 12, Cal State Northridge 11.

Cal State Northridge ended the year with a 28-8 record. The Matadors captured a share of the Big West regular season title at 4-1.
