CSUN's NCAA Tournament Bid Ends With 7-6 Overtime Loss To Long Beach State
April 30, 2011
Santa Barbara, Calif. - This was indeed, a tough loss.
CSUN's bid for a berth in the NCAA women's water polo tournament will have to wait at least another year.
Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State staged a highly intense showdown on a Saturday afternoon at UCSB's Campus Pool in the semi finals of the 2011 Big West Tournament. Despite the fact the 49ers entered the game with a losing record (13-16) compared to CSUN's winning record (21-14), and a national ranking lower than Cal State Northridge (CSUN was 15th, LBS was 16th), Long Beach State emerged with a nerve-wracking 7-6 overtime victory.
Neither team led by more than one goal the entire game.
Early in the game, every time Long Beach State scored, back came Cal State Northridge. The 49ers opened the game with a 1-0 with 1:36 left in the first period. CSUN's Sydney Sonoda tied the game at 1-1 on a man-advantage goal with 41 seconds left in the opening period.
Again Long Beach State went in front, 2-1, at the 3:21 of the second period. Back came Cal State Northridge with another man-advantage goal by Whitney Delgado to tie the game at 2-2 with 2:57 before intermission.
Again Long Beach State marched in front with a goal at the 6:24 mark of the third period. Back came CSUN with a goal by Lindsy Nelson at the 6:02 mark of the third period.
Delgado scored her second goal of the game to give CSUN its first lead of the game, 4-3, with 5:04 remaining in the third period. But two straight goals in the next two minutes gave Long Beach State a 5-4 lead. Back came Cal State Northridge with Delgado's third goal to tie the game at 5-5 at the 1:40 mark of the third period.
The score remained tied until 2:26 of the fourth quarter when CSUN's Melissa Doll scored what looked like a possible game winner to give the Matadors a 6-5 lead. However, Long Beach State answered one minute later when Melissa Matheson tied the game, 6-6, on a penalty shot.
In the first overtime, Cal State Northridge had a chance to go ahead, but Cal State Northridge couldn't covert on a penalty shot. LBS freshman Chelsea Parks swam down the pool and scored with 47 seconds remaining. That proved to be the game winning goal.
Cal State Northridge will complete its 2011 season with a third place game at the Big West Tournament against UC Davis on Sunday (5/1/11) at 12:45 p.m.
Cal State Northridge (21-15) 1 1 3 1 0 0-0 = 6
