Northridge, Calif. - The nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team travels south this weekend to compete in the two-day UC San Diego Invitational.

Sixteen teams are competing in the event that starts on Saturday, February 12. The nationally-ranked teams include #3 UCLA, #6 Loyola Marymount, #7 Michigan, #9 San Diego State, #11 UC Irvine, #12 UC Santa Barbara, #13 Cal State Northridge, #14 Hartwick, #17 UC San Diego and #20 Marist.

There are four brackets (four teams in each bracket) in the tournament. Cal State Northridge is pooled with Loyola Marymount, Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State East Bay. The Matadors start play on Saturday (February 12) at 9:20 a.m. against Cal State Bakersfield. If the Matadors win, they will again play on Saturday at 2:40 p.m. against the winner of the Loyola Marymount-Cal State East Bay game. If Cal State Northridge loses its first round match against Cal State Bakersfield, the Matadors will play at 1:20 p.m. against the loser of the Loyola Marymount-Cal State East Bay game.

Tournament play will continue on Sunday with two games for each of the 16 teams.

Cal State Northridge is 4-3. The Matadors have won three games in a row following their three-game sweep at last weekend's Cal Baptist Invitational.

Whitney Delgado and Heidi Pettinger have combined to score 30 goals in the seven games. Delgado leads the team with 16 goals.

Delgado earned Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week honors for her 12 goals in three victories at the recent Cal Baptist Invitational.

Delgado led the Matadors in scoring in all three games as CSUN defeated Azusa Pacific (17-6), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (12-5) and Concordia (16-10). Delgado scored a season-high five goals against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and posted four vs. Concordia and three against Azusa Pacific.

Delgado also collected seven assists for the week, including five assists against Azusa Pacific.

Delgado's 16 goals this year gives her 131 career goals in two-plus seasons. That ties her for fourth place all-time at CSUN with Erica Bonetti (2003-06).
