Nationally-Ranked Cal State Northridge Falls To #1 UCLA, 10-5

Northridge, Ca - The nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team stayed competitive with top-ranked and unbeaten UCLA for more than three quarters, but the Bruins scored two late fourth period goals to post a 10-5 victory over the 16th-ranked Matadors on Saturday afternoon at Matador Pool.

Dayna Van Gorder scored twice for Cal State Northridge while Jessica Coy, Chelsea Curran and Renee Gargiulo added a goal each. The Matadors fell to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Katie Rulon scored the hat trick for the Bruins while Jillian Kraus added a pair of goals for UCLA which upped its season record to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF.

UCLA, the three-time defending NCAA championships, scored four first period goals, but the Matadors kept pace with two of their own; at 4:37 by Curran and at :46 by Van Gorder.

The Cal State Northridge defense didn't allow the Bruins to score in the second period, while Coy scored at 5:47 to cut the Bruin lead to 4-3 at halftime.

A goal at 7:08 by Kraus and at 3:27 by Tanya Gandy in the third period gave UCLA a 6-3 lead. However, CSUN cut the margin to two goals on a goal at :58 by Van Gorder. However, 18 seconds later, Rulon found the back of the net for UCLA to make it 7-4 Bruins after three periods.

Cal State Northridge will compete at the UC Irvine Tournament on Feb. 23-24.
