Irvine, Calif. - Sydney Sonoda, a sophomore on the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team, has been named Big West Conference Player of the Week.
The vote was conducted by the leagues coaches.
Last weekend at the Cal Lutheran Invitational, Sonoda scored nine goals as the Matadors captured three of four games in the two-day tournament.
In a 15-9 victory over Cal Lutheran (3/7/09) and a 12-5 decision over Cal State Monterey Bay (3/8/09), Sonoda scored a career-high four goals in each game.
Sonoda has emerged as one of the top goal scorers on the Matadors this year. Sonoda is third on the team in goals with 21. Last year, Sonoda tallied ten goals in being named team Rookie of the Year.
The Matadors, 10-12 on the season, continue their season on Saturday and Sunday at the Loyola Marymount Invitational. On Saturday at 9:40 a.m., the Matadors will face Princeton. Then at 4:40 p.m., CSUN will face the challenge of Sonoma State. On Sunday, there are two more games as the Matadors face Indiana at 9:40 a.m., and Cal State Bakersfield at 1:10 p.m.
