Tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge Hosts #13 UC Irvine, travels to Top-Ranked USC

Northridge, Calif. - A look at this week's schedule for the tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge water polo team reveals some real tough competition.
On Friday (4/2/10, 3:00 p.m.) at Matador Pool, the Matadors will host 13th-ranked UC Irvine (9-11) in a Big West Conference game. Then on Saturday (4/3/10, 2:00 p.m.), Cal State Northridge gets a great opportunity to see how it stacks up against an elite collegiate water polo team, the top-ranked USC Trojans (14-1) at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium.
The Matadors are definitely on a roll. CSUN has won nine straight games to raise its season record to 20-5. It is the third time in the nine-year history of Matador water polo program that the team has won at least 20 games. During the 2003 campaign, Cal State Northridge was 24-8. Last year, the Matadors were 20-16.
Cal State Northridge is 1-0 in Big West play following last week's 11-4 victory over Long Beach State. UC Irvine, 9-11 overall, will be playing its first league contest when it faces Cal State Northridge.
The Anteaters feature a balanced attack with Caitlin Haskell leading the UCI attack with 29 goals followed by Cortney Collyer with 28, Jessy Cardey with 20 and Kat Plummer with 18. Plummer has 115 career goals (7th all-time in school history), Collyer has 73 goals (9th all-time) and Haskell has 71 career goals (tenth all-time).
The game at #1 USC on Saturday will be a supreme test for CSUN. The Trojans are the unanimous pick to be the #1 team in the nation, and has chalked up some impressive wins in a 14-1 season. Victories include those over #2 Stanford (10-6), #3 California (10-5), #4 UCLA (13-3), #5 Hawaii (14-7), #6 San Jose State (15-5), #7 Loyola Marymount (9-2), #8 Michigan (14-6), #13 UC Irvine (15-5) and #14 San Diego State (9-4).
USC has won 12 games in a row. During that span, the Trojans have not allowed more than four goals in the past three games, and goalie Tumua Anae has recorded at least ten saves in six straight games.
Joelle Bakhazi leads the USC attack with 26 goals. Patricia Jancso and Kally Lucas have 22 and 21 goals, respectively.
This will be the eighth meeting in the CSUN-USC series with the Trojans holding a 7-0 advantage.
One advantage for Cal State Northridge in its meeting against top-ranked USC at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Trojans will have a noon game against 19th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield before facing the Matadors.
Cal State Northridge continues to maintain its #10 national ranking, according to this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll find ... It is the fifth straight week CSUN has been ranked tenth in the country ... Pac-10 schools continue to be the elite collegiate water polo teams in the country ... Three goals and three steals against Long Beach State (3/27/10) has netted Cal State Northridge water polo player Heidi Pettinger Big West Player of the Week honors ... Pettinger, a sophomore center-defender form Corona, Calif., now has 22 goals (fourth-best on the Matadors) in 24 games played this year, far surpassing her 12 goals in 36 games last year ... Pettinger's career-high three goals against the 49ers is the fourth-time this year she has accomplished that feat ... Pettinger, in addition to her 22 goals, is among the team leaders in steals (25) and assists (15) ... Pettinger is the third Matador water polo player to win Big West Player of the Week honors this season ... Sophomore Whitney Delgado (2009-) is seventh all-time in scoring with 88 goals ... Senior Kirra Kylander (2007-) has 85 career goals, good for eighth place in the record book ... Junior Chelsea Curran (2007-) has 80 career goals which is tenth all-time in school history while Sydney Sonoda (2008-) is eleventh all-time in career goals with 78 ... Senior Kristin McLaughlin (2007-) will end her four-year CSUN career ranked in the school record book Top-10 in career steals (178, #3) and career assists (113, #4) ... Another senior, Kirra Kylander (2007-) is third all-time in career assists (129) ... Whitney Delgado continues to produce great offensive statistics ... Only a sophomore, Delgado has a team-leading 53 goals which is the most number of single season goals since the 2007 season when Allison Brookes tallied 62 goals ... The school record for single season goals is certainly within reach for Delgado ... The school record is 74 by Chari Christopher during the 2005 season ... Delgado has 88 career goals in less than two seasons at Cal State Northridge which is seventh-best in school history ... Delgado tallied 35 goals in 36 games last year, and this year her 53 goals have been produced in just 24 games ... Delgado has scored at least one goal in 23 of the 24 games she has played ... At the Cal Lutheran Invitational, Delgado produced a career-high six goals against ninth-ranked Arizona State. ...
