#17 Cal State Northridge Hosts #15 UC Davis, #18 Pacific in Big West Openers

Northridge, Calif. - And now let's get down to real business.

After 27 games in which Cal State Northridge has played in six tournaments and four non-league opponents, the Matadors, ranked 17th nationally, finally begin Big West regular season competition on Saturday (4/2/11) against 15th-ranked UC Davis (16-7), and on Sunday (4/3/11) against 18th-ranked Pacific (16-8). Both games will start at noon at Matador Pool.

The Matadors have chalked up a 16-11 overall season record. Cal State Northridge and UC Davis met earlier this year in a non-league game at the UC Irvine Invitational on February 27. At the time, Cal State Northridge was ranked 13th and UC Davis ranked 17th. The Aggies exploded for four second period goals to en route to an 8-5 victory over the Matadors. Whitney Delgado led the Matadors with two goals.

The CSUN-UCD game features the top scoring team in the conference, UC Davis, against a Matador team that has given up the most goals amongst the six conference teams. UC Davis is averaging 11.48 goals per game while CSUN is giving up 8.74 goals per game.

UC Davis features the scoring talents of Jessica Dunn and Carmen Eggert, who have scored 39 and 37 goals, respectively. Dunn and Eggert are ranked sixth and seventh in the Big West Conference in scoring.

On Sunday, Cal State Northridge hosts a Pacific team is ranked 18th in the nation. The Tigers rely on the scoring talents of Dara Tawarahara, a senior who has scored 40 goals this year, fifth-best in the conference. Mandy King and Elise Martin are ninth and tenth in league scoring with 34 and 33 goals, respectively. Michelle Relton is the second-best goalkeeper in the Big West Conference with 11.21 saves per game.

Cal State Northridge will complete the weekend with a non-league game against Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at Matador Pool. Game time is 3 p.m.

Scoring Saga ...
Seven CSUN players are scoring in double-figures ... Three of those players are among the Top 5 scorers in the Big West Conference ... Whitney Delgado, who led the conference in scoring last year with a school record 80 goals, is again the conference leader this year with 61 ...
