Northridge, Calif. - The tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team completes the regular portion of its 2010 season when the Matadors travel to #17 UC Davis (15-14 overall, 1-2 BWC) on Friday (4/16/10, 6:00 p.m.) and at Pacific (20-9 overall, 2-1 BWC) on Saturday (4/17/10, 11:00 a.m.) in Big West Conference action.
Before heading home following the games at UC Davis and Pacific, Cal State Northridge travels to Santa Clara (14-13) for a non-league game on Sunday (4/18/10, noon).
The Matadors are enjoying their greatest season in school history with a school record 25 wins (25-6), a first place standing (3-0) in the Big West Conference standings, and a national ranking of tenth.
Cal State Northridge continues to maintain its #10 national ranking, according to this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll ... It is the seventh straight week CSUN has been ranked tenth in the country ... Pac-10 schools continue to be the elite collegiate water polo teams in the country ... Five Pac-10 schools are ranked in the Top 10 led by #1 USC, #2 Stanford, #3 California, #4 and five-time defending NCAA champion UCLA, and ninth-ranked Arizona State ... Hawai'i is ranked fifth, while San Jose State is sixth, and Loyola Marymount and Michigan are ranked ninth ... Other Big West schools ranked in the national Top-20 besides tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge are UC Santa Barbara (12th), UC Irvine (13th), UOP (16th) and UC Davis (17th).
With three more regular season games and three more games in the upcoming Big West Tournament, Cal State Northridge has an opportunity to add to their new school records in wins (25), goals (323) and assists (303) ... Another school record is looming ... Sophomore Whitney Delgado has scored 68 goals this year, only six short of the school record of 74 set by Chari Christopher in 2005 ... Allison Brookes is second for a single season with 72 goals set in 2006.
Cal State Northridge still has the #1 defense in the Big West Conference ... The Matadors have given up only 6.26 goals per game ... CSUN's offense is also at the top of the conference list at 10.42 gpg ... Nicole Concialdi and Jillian Stapf are ranked 1-2 in the league in giving up goals per game ... Concialdi has given up 5.62 gpg while Stapf is in giving up only 6.52 goals per game ... Stapf's 9.80 saves per game are third-best in the BWC behind UCSB's Ruth Milne at 10.67 spg and UOP's Brooke Miller at 10.61 spg ... Three CSUN players are among the top five scorers in the Big West Conference ... Super sophomore Whitney Delgado has 68 goals, second-best in the Big West Conference behind Jasmine Myles of Pacific with 72 ... Alison Pierce is fourth with 43 goals while Sydney Sonoda has 36 goals, seventh-best in the league.
At last Sunday's home game at Matador Pool, Cal State Northridge honored its seven outstanding seniors who have contributed to the national prominence of Matador women's water polo in recent years ... Alexis Gackstetter, Renee Gargiulo, Kirra Kylander, Kristin McLaughlin, Alison Pierce, Ashley Rogers and Jillian Stapf have combined for 73 wins in the past four years along with a Big West regular season title last year ... Over the last two seasons, the seven seniors have helped provide two 20-win seasons (20 wins in 2009, 23 thus far in 2010) ... Going into this weekend's games, Gackstetter, Gargiulo, Kylander, McLaughlin, Pierce, Rogers and Stapf have scored 309 goals, more than 400 assists, and more than 500 steals ... Stapf has a school record 1,240 career saves.
Four Cal State Northridge players find themselves fighting for a spot in the school record Top 10 for career goals ... Sophomore Whitney Delgado (2009-) is seventh all-time in scoring with 103 goals ... Residing in fifth place all-time is Pam Barba (2002-04) with 105 goals, and in sixth place all-time is Christine Cruz (2005-07) with 104 ... Senior Kirra Kylander (2007-) has 87 career goals, good for eighth place in the record book ... Junior Chelsea Curran (2007-) and Sydney Sonoda (2008-) each have 83 career goals which is tenth all-time in school history ... Senior Kristin McLaughlin (2007-) will end her four-year CSUN career ranked in the school record book Top-10 in career steals (188, #2) and career assists (123, #4) ... Another senior, Kirra Kylander (2007-) is third all-time in career assists (135) and ninth all-time in steals (86) ... Senior Renee Gargiulo (2007-) is seventh all-time in career steals (120) and seventh all-time in career assists (96) ... Senior All-American Jillian Stapf continues to improve on her career saves school record ... Stapf's 218 saves (#6 for a single season) this year gives her 1,240 for her four-year career.
Kirra Kylander's team-leading 52 assists this year are fourth-best for a single season in school history ... Whitney Delgado is not only a scoring machine, but she is third on the Matadors in assists (31, #3) and fourth in steals (29, #3) this year ... Kristin McLaughlin is enjoying a triple double-double season with a team-leading 36 steals and 39 assists, and 18 goals ... Ten CSUN players have scored at least 15 goals this year ... Cal State Northridge is quick to grab the lead in games ... In the first period alone, the Matadors have outscored the opposition (94-to-51), and enjoy a 87-to-41 goal margin in the second period.
