Northridge, Calif. - Based on their efforts to propel the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team to its greatest season ever (28-8), Whitney Delgado, Sydney Sonoda and Jillian Stapf were named today as All-Americans (Honorable Mention) by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

"All three players deserve to merit this award due to their contributions to the team throughout the 2010 season," said head coach Marcelo Leonardi. "All three are considered impact players that can change the outcome of a game, whether by making saves, scoring goals, or drawing ejections. Cal State Northridge is proud of Jillian (Stapf), Sydney (Sonoda) and Whitney (Delgado)."

Delgado, only a sophomore in 2010, became one of the nation's top scorers with a school record 80 goals. The First Team All-Big West selection tied for the league lead in goals scored along with UOP's Jasmine Myles.

In two seasons at Cal State Northridge, Delgado has scored 115 goals, fifth-best in school history. Delgado is on pace to easily break the school record in career goals in the next two years. The school record is 222 by Allison Brookes (2005-08).

Sonoda, a junior, was also a First Team All-Big West selection, and was co-winner of the CSUN MVP Offensive Player of the Year Award along with Delgado. Sonoda led the Matadors in games played this year (35 out of 36 games), kick outs drawn (82), was second in steals (36), third in scoring (43 goals) and eighth in assists (14).

Stapf, considered the greatest player in Cal State Northridge history, gained All-American honors for a third straight season.

Stapf gained numerous post-season honors in 2010. Stapf, a senior, was the 2020 Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Year in addition to All-American Academic and Big West All-Academic accolades.
