Matador Women Take Fifth at UC San Diego, Men Also Impressive Again

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men's and women's cross country team continued an excellent season as the Matador women finished fifth and the men 11th at the Triton Invitational Saturday at UC San Diego.

Araceli Zainos again paced the CSUN women's squad as she finished eighth among 238 runners in a time of 22:39.1. Yvonne Castillo-Ubrina was also impressive finishing 21st in 23:30.8, the second Matador woman in the top-25. Also for the CSUN women, Fany Alvarado was 43rd (24:01.5), Alexis Pichardo was 48th (24:05.4), Kaitlin Janes was 58th (24:15.0), LeGia Pendergraph was 78th (24:41.2), Vanessa Carr was 81st (24:42.6), Kendahl Waalk was 122nd (25:15.5) and Annalise Lopez was 160th (26:03.2).

"The women did great finishing fifth," said head coach Avery Anderson. "Araceli ran outstanding for us getting eighth overall."

As a team, the women had 178 points and posted an average time of 23:42.36.

In the men's race, Martin Santillan was CSUN's top runner for the first time this season finishing 46th in a time of 28:16.0. Julio Mora was three spots back placing 49th in 28:22.7, followed by Steven Gonzales in 55th (28:58.0), Marcelo Rosales in 61st (29:26.0), Ezekial Glass in 72nd (30:56.0) and Eddie Garcia in 73rd (30:57.5).

As a team, the Matador men finished 11th with 283 points compiling an average time of 29:11.74.

The Cal State Northridge men and women will be back in action next Saturday, Oct. 13 as the Matadors host the Northridge Invitational on the CSUN campus.
