Great Day for Matador Men, Women and Community at Northridge Invitational

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge hosted its annual Northridge Invitational Cross Country meet Saturday and the Matador women finished second while the men were third prior to the team hosting a community 5k run.

After two days of rain, the weather was clear for Saturday's meet and the women opened the meet with a 5k run followed by the men's 8k. Then for the first time, the community was invited to compete in a 5k open run to conclude the festivities.

In the 5k, the Matador women, with 65 points, finished second to UNLV which posted 59 points and had the overall winner in Lauren Petersen. CSUN's Araceli Zainos led in the early stages before finishing fourth among collegiate runners and seventh overall in a time of 18:30.27. Yvonne Castillo-Urbina was just behind Zainos in ninth place in a time of 18:40.18.

Next it was Alexis Pichardo who took 20th in 19:06.79 followed by LeGia Pendergraph in 24th place (19:13.66) while Vanessa Carr (27th, 19:17.37) and Kaitlin Janes (28th, 19:18.45) finished in nearly a photo finish. Kendahl Waalk (20:08.76) was 44th and Annalise Lopez (20:58.49) was 50th to round out the Matador team effort.

As a team, CSUN posted an average time of 18:57.66 and a total of 65 points. Central Arizona was third (75), LA Trade Tech fourth (89), Pepperdine fifth (92) and CSU Bakersfield sixth (124).

In the men's 8k, Hunter Hays sprinted to the finish line to finish sixth among collegiate runners and ninth overall in a time of 25:59.97. Central Arizona's Tod Jackson won the men's race in a time of 25:17.84.

Hays was followed in the Matador lineup by Marcelo Rosales in 34th-place (27:54.38), Julio Mora in 36th-place (27:56.33), Steven Gonzales in 41st (28:27.98), Eddie Garcia in 52nd (29:48.63), Martin Santillan in 55th (30:40.29) and Ezekial Glass in 56th (30:51.77). 

CSUN accumulated 100 points as a team and finished with an average time of 28:01.46. Behind Central Arizona was LA Trade Tech (45 pts), Off the Couch TC (104) and Pepperdine (119).
