Matadors Drop 6-3 Decision to Fresno State
5/8/2018 6:14:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (21-26) fell to Fresno State 6-3 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field. Nolan Bumstead collected three hits including a home run and Trevor Casanova extended his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games. Andrew Weston worked four innings, allowing two runs on five hits while Blake Schriever hurled three shutout innings in relief. The Matadors were able to get the potential winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but the Bulldogs held on late to pick up the win.Â
"I think [Fresno State's pitching] did a good job, they attacked with their fastball extremely well. We didn't capitalize in the front part of the game," said head coach Greg Moore. "We've just got to keep finding ways to put good at bats together. I thought our effort was good today.Â
"Drew did a good job of throwing the fastball in to lefties," added Moore about Weston. "His changeup is always there, and he threw it in plus and minus counts. I like what Drew is able to do right now. He's bouncing back from an injury, and he's going to help us down the stretch."
The Bulldogs jumped in front in the top of the second against Weston. Torin Goldstein doubled to start the inning and later advanced to third on a groundout. Goldstein eventually scored on a wild pitch to put Fresno State ahead 1-0. Weston would rebound after the double to Goldstein to retire six of the next seven batters.Â
CSUN answered back quickly in the bottom of the second on one swing of the bat. On just the second pitch of the inning, Bumstead hit an opposite field home run to right center to square the game at 1-1.Â
The game remained tied until the fourth where Fresno State surged back into the lead. After Weston surrendered back-to-back singles to start the inning, he struck out JT Arruda and Nate Thimjon. Miles Tomczak stepped to the plate next and hit an RBI double to left center, scoring Jeremiah Burks. Goldstein attempted to score from first base but Justin Toerner threw the ball quickly back to the infield to Alvaro Rubalcaba who delivered a perfect relay to Casanova at home plate. Casanova applied the tag in time for the third out.Â
In the fifth, Wesley Moore came out of the bullpen and struck out two of the first three batters before hitting Korby Batesole to keep the inning alive. After a change on the mound, Burks greeted reliever Cassius Hamm unkindly with a two-run double to left field. Thimjon later made it a 6-1 game with a two-run single with the bases loaded. Hamm escaped further trouble by retiring Tomczak, leaving two runners on base.Â
The Matadors were held to a pair of hits through six innings until finally breaking through with four in the seventh. Bumstead and Riley Conlan kicked off the inning with singles before Rubalcaba hit into a fielder's choice. Ben Martz would come through with an RBI single to bring the Matadors a run closer. Two batters later, Toerner stroked another RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-3. Casanova came to the plate with runners at first and second but Ryan Jensen forced the Matador backstop to ground out to second.Â
After CSUN was turned away in the eighth, the Matadors mounted one final rally in the ninth. Conlan reached on a one-out single before Alex Hull collected an infield single to short. On the Hull hit, Batesole committed a fielding error that allowed Conlan to move up to third.
The Bulldogs' Friday starter Edgar Gonzalez was then summoned from the bullpen to try to stop the bleeding. Gonzalez struck out Toerner but walked Casanova to load the bases. Albee Weiss would step to the plate next and battle Gonzalez in a nine-pitch at bat. Weiss fouled off four two-strike pitches before finally going down swinging to end the game.Â
Bumstead registered his 13th multiple-hit game of the season along with his sixth home run. The CSUN third baseman has reached base safely in 11-straight games.Â
Schriever's three innings tie a career high he set earlier this season at Ohio State on March 18. Also out of the bullpen, Theron Kay and Jayson Newman combined to throw a scoreless top of the ninth.Â
The Matadors conclude their home schedule this weekend against UC Davis. The first of a three-game series is set for Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. An audio only broadcast will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ross Porter on the call.Â
