Williams has had a long and illustrious career as a sports official. He served as an umpire at four College World Series, officiated the 1984 Olympics, and walked the NFL sidelines for many years as a referee.
In 2013, Williams received the National Collegiate Umpire Award, honoring a lifetime of excellence in umpiring by The College Baseball Hall of Fame. Williams umpired college baseball for 32 years and is currently the Big West Conference baseball officials coordinator. He worked the Division I College World Series in Omaha, Neb., eight times and umpired Division I regionals 21 times.
Add to that numerous Division II, Division III and NAIA regionals, and it tallies an impressive list of important baseball events over which Williams presided. He has supervised the umpires in several conferences over the years, and also found time to work as an NFL referee for 23 years, including three Super Bowls. He also served in a variety of leadership roles within collegiate umpiring, including time as coordinator of umpires for the Big West Conference, the Western Athletic Conference and the Pac-10 Southern Division.
Williams, a 1964 CSUN graduate in kinesiology, passed away on Sept. 18, 2022.
