Jack Elway was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995. Elway served as head football coach at CSUN from 1976 to 1978. He was introduced as CSUN's head coach by University President James Cleary and Director of Athletics Dr, Glenn Arnott on Mar 23, 1976.

Elway had a successful three-year stint at Northridge, compiling a 20-11-1 overall record, winning a then-school-record eight games in his first season in 1976. Only one other CSUN football coach - Bob Burt - has had as many wins in one season. Burt's 1986 team went 8-3. During his time with the Matadors, Elway began developing and implementing creative, multidimensional spread and passing offenses, a system he would continue to use and adapt throughout his subsequent head coaching stints at San Jose State and Stanford.

After three seasons at Northridge, Elway moved to San José State following the 1978 season. The Spartans had considerable success under Elway, posting a 35–20–1 (.634) record in five seasons and winning three consecutive games over Stanford from 1981 to 1983.

Elway would coach a total of 34 seasons in the professional and collegiate ranks, serving as scouting director for the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos in the National Football League.
