Kathy Slaten-Ayala

Kathy (Kat) Slaten-Ayala was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992. Slaten-Ayala, who lettered for the CSUN Softball team from 1983 to 1986, is widely regarded as one of the most dominant pitchers in college softball history, leading the Matadors to multiple national championships.
She was a cornerstone member of three CSUN national championship teams, earning All-American honors in every single season of her college career. As a pitcher for the Matadors, Slaten-Ayala appeared in 162 career games and 1,222 innings pitched, posting 145 complete games , 21 no-hitters, and two perfect games. She finished her CSUN career wth 123 wins, 97 shutouts, and 1,537 strikeouts with a career ERA of .235.
CSUN's Team MVP each season from 1983 to 1986, Slaten-Ayala was a four-time first-team All-Region and first-team All-CCAA selection (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986). She earned NCAA first-team All-America honors in 1984, 1985, and 1986 and was a second-team pick in 1983.Â
She is still currently the holder of the following NCAA records: career innings pitched (1,222 from 1983-1986), season shutouts (32 in 1984), career shutouts (97 from 1983-1986), season strikeouts (533 in 1985), career strikeouts (1,537 from 1983 to 1986), season strikeouts per game (22 in 1983), and no-hitters (Perfect Games) in one season (2 in 1983).
Among Slaten-Ayala's career accomplishments are NCAA Most Valuable Player (1985), CCAA Most Valuable Pitcher (1985, 1986), four-time Daily News College Female Athlete of the Year (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986) and a nominee for the prestigious Broderick Award in 1984.
Prior to CSUN, she starred at La Reina High School and was later inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. While at La Reina, she finished her high school career with a record of 42-7 with 17 no-hitters and 695 strikeouts. She was a three-time Tri-Valley League MVP (1980, 1981, 1982).
Slaten-Ayala earned her degree in recreation and physical education from CSUN in 1986.
