Marty Friedman was inducted into the CSUN Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985. Friedman lettered in baseball for CSUN, then known as San Fernando Valley State College, under Hall of Fame coach Bob Hiegert from 1972 to 1973.

He was a key player on the historic 1972 Valley State team that advanced to the NCAA Division II College World Series championship game, finishing as the national runner-up. He earned first-team all-conference honors as an outfielder during that historic season. Friedman also played for back-to-back CCAA championship teams in 1972 and 1973.

Friedman left CSUN holding the all-time career walks record with 93, a mark that still ranks ninth-most in school history to this day. His 51 career walks in 1972 are also the seventh-most for a single season at CSUN.

Friedman broke into professional baseball in 1974 at age 22 and was part of a notable minor transactions when he was traded from the California Angels organization to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for major league infielder Ed Crosby on Dec. 10, 1976, During his time in professional baseball, Friedman played for the El Paso Diablos, a Double-A minor league affiliate of the California Angels.
