Caldwell captured individual medalist honors at the 1972 U.S. Intercollegiate Championship at Stanford, carding a total score of 216 to win the individual tournament. He went on to finish seventh at the 1972 NCAA Championship in Williamstown, Mass.
In 1972, Caldwell turned professional. He obtained his PGA Tour Card in 1975 and played on the PGA Tour from 1972 to 1990. His best year in professional golf was 1983, when he won the World Cup. He also had six top-10 finishes that year in PGA Tour events, which included a win at the LaJet Coors Classic. Caldwell has played in major championships 15 times, with his best finish in a major being third place at the 1979 PGA Championship in Bloomfield, Mich.
Caldwell also played on what is now the Nationwide Tour in the 1990's and he also played on the Champions Tour from 2000 to 2006. Caldwell has played on several other tours during his regular and senior careers, including the Mexican Tour, Texas Tour, Sunbelt Senior Tour, and the Heartland Players Senior Tour.
Caldwell graduated from San Fernando Valley State College (CSUN) in 1972.
