Seawolves Defeat Matadors In Opening Round of Great Alaska Shootout

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (0-5) lost, 72-44, to Alaska-Anchorage in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout. Freshman Neeta SreeKanth led the Matadors with 10 points and five rebounds in the contest.
A rookie from Arlington, Texas, Sreekanth set a series of new season highs in the contest, playing 18 minutes off the bench. In addition to her point and rebound total, she had two assists and a block and steal in the contest.
Senior Whitney Ligon and junior Kayla Rutherford each scored seven points off the bench for CSUN. Both hit a 3-pointer in the contest and Rutherford finished with three assists and three rebounds.
Sophomores Analee Viena-Lota and Charise Hall each scored six points for Northridge in the game. For Hall, it was her first playing time of the season, while Viena-Lota remains the team's leading scorer through five games, averaging 10.6 points per game.
The Seawolves took advantage of their home court, jumping out to a 21-7 lead and a 39-13 halftime lead. Senior Toncia Tademy had four points at the break for CSUN.
In the second half, Northridge shot the ball better, hitting at a 39.4 percent clip in the stanza. Sreekanth drained a pair of 3-pointers and also had a block and a steal in the period.
The Matadors will play the loser of the Syracuse-Jackson State game on Wednesday with a tip off slated for 2:30 p.m. (AKT). Dave Caldwell will provide the play-by-play coverage of the game on gomatadors.com.
