Matadors Drop 75-67 Decision to Titans

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (1-16, 1-4 Big West) lost 75-67 to Cal State Fullerton Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym in a Big West Conference game. Junior Jasmine Erving had a career-high 34 points and 14 field goals and finished with 13 rebounds to post her third-straight double-double for CSUN.

The game was a tight affair with the Titans clinging to a small lead for most of the game. CSUN closed to within 54-53 with 6:55 left to play, but Fullerton outscored Northridge 21-14 over the final seven minutes to seal the victory.

Erving was a force inside for the Matadors all game, finishing 14-of-31 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. She pulled down 13 boards for her fourth-straight double-double, fifth of the season and 12th of her career.

The 34 points, 24 of which came in the second half, are the most by a Big West player this season. For the year, she is now averaging a career-high 14.7 points and 7.4 rebounds. In Big West play, Erving's numbers jump to 21.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

Bridgette Conejo also had a strong effort for the Matadors, finishing with a season-high 13 points and 10 rebounds. It was the second double-double of her career and she added three assists and a steal in 39 minutes of action.

Analee Viena-Lota added 10 points and had five rebounds for Northridge. The Matadors trailed 36-31 at halftime after shooting 28.6 percent (10-of-35) in the opening 20 minutes. Erving had 10 points at the break.

For the game, the Matadors shot 35.7 percent (25-of-70) from the field compared to 37.3 percent (22-of-59) for the Titans. CSUN won the rebounding battle, 44-41, and had 20 points of 15 Titan turnovers.
Lyndsey Grove led Fullerton with 26 points while Megan Richardson added 14 and Lauren Bushong had 10 points. The Titans' victory snapped a four-game winning streak for the Matadors in the series.

Northridge returns to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 19 with a non-conference game against San Diego. The Matadors and Toreros will tip-off at 5 p.m. from The Matadome, as the game is part of a CSUN basketball doubleheader. The Northridge men's squad face Seattle University following the completion of the women's game.

The Matadors next Big West game will be on the road again, this time taking the team to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to face Cal Poly on Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. Northridge then plays its next three league games at home, hosting UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside.
