CSUN Falls on the Road in Four at Stanford

NORTHRIDGE, CA - Despite a hard-fought four-set loss at fourth-ranked Stanford Wednesday, the CSUN men's volleyball team maintained its one-game lead for the final spot in the MPSF Tournament.
But now instead of having a single team one game back, two teams are within one of the Matadors (6-13) with three matches to play. Cal Baptist (5-14) moved into a tie with UC Irvine (5-14) after the Lancers swept the Anteaters Wednesday in Riverside.
CSUN gave itself a chance against the No. 4 Cardinal despite hitting just .171. After dropping the first set 25-19, the Matadors put together a late surge to take set two 30-28. CSUN then looked to have control of the third set as the Matadors led 22-18 following one of Stanford's 19 service errors. But the hosts outscored CSUN 7-1 from that point on to take the swing set 25-23 and then won the fourth 25-18.
"We played hard tonight, we just didn't play smart," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "I thought our serving was good and we did some nice things but we just didn't execute when we really needed to."
Junior Jakub Ciesla led the Matadors with 14 kills (.200) and 11 blocks, his third double-double of the season. Senior Dan Starkey added 11 kills on a season-high 34 attacks. Sophomore Josiah Byers also had a nice match with nine kills on .533 hitting to go with three solo blocks.
Sam Porter had 37 assists and matched Bradley Sakaida with two aces.
The Cardinal hit .356 as a team in improving to 18-3 overall and 16-3 in the MPSF.
CSUN stays on the road Saturday as the Matadors face another crucial road match at No. 6 Pepperdine. First serve at Firestone Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7 p.m.
