GARDEN GROVE, Calif. - Two exemplary Matadors were honored for their academic achievements at Thursday morning's annual Big West Conference Scholar-Athlete Breakfast at the Wyndham hotel. Senior women's track and field student-athlete Monique Griffiths and senior men's golf student-athlete Felix Mory were celebrated alongside the conference's top student-athletes on and off the field.
A 2017 graduate of CSUN, Griffiths is the all time Big West Conference Championship meet record holder in the hammer throw. She won the event at both the 2015 and 2017 Conference championships, while also placing first in the discus in 2015. She placed in the top 20 in both the hammer and the discus at the NCAA Championships, earning All American honors.
Griffiths owns the CSUN all-time record in the hammer and was a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier and also represented the USA at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Under 23 Championships. She served as the CSUN Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President from 2015-2017. Griffiths graduated with highest honors with a degree in Public Health and a minor in Psychology and plans to pursue a graduate degree and to work as a professional psychologist.
"This means everything to me and I'm truly honored," said Griffiths. "I've worked so hard and just to be acknowledged for this award is an honor in itself. I hope other student-athletes who haven't had the chance to receive this award will see that if you put in the hard work you can receive the benefits."
Mory, the senior team captain of the CSUN men's golf team, was the 2017 Big West Conference individual champion. He is a member of the French National Team and was also selected to play in the Palmer Cup as a member of Team Europe. Mory has a world amateur ranking of 335 and will compete in the British Amateur Open later this year.
Prior to transferring to CSUN, Mory competed for Santa Barbara City College where he earned first team All Southern California honors after finishing second at the Southern California Championship. An academic All American, he is majoring in Urban Studies, specializing in Regional Planning. His goal is to be selected to play for the French National Team in the World Amateur Team Championship to be held in Ireland later this year. Ultimately, he plans to pursue a professional golf career and to become a real estate entrepreneur in his home country.
"I'm really proud, it's a great achievement," said Mory. "For me, being successful in school is as important as being successful on the golf course. It's always nice to be recognized for the hard work I put in in the classroom and for golf. Managing your time is such a huge key to being successful in both areas, so those are skills that I will use in my professional life."
The two Matadors were cheered on by CSUN's Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Edward Jackiewicz along with their respective coaches, Lawrence Johnson (Track & Field) and Jim Bracken (Men's Golf). Several other family, friends and CSUN Athletics administrators and academic advisors were also in attendance.
