NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A pair of major CSUN Athletics construction projects are nearing completion as the start of another academic year is quickly approaching.
Due to the creation of the G6 Parking Structure, the CSUN Beach Volleyball Complex is being relocated from the east side of campus to the center of campus, alongside Matador Hall.
The new facility will be expanded from the size of the current facility to accommodate CSUN recreational purposes and other events. The former beach volleyball facility had three competition courts, the new facility will also have the same three competition courts but will have additional space for a potential layout of up to five recreational courts.
In addition the new complex will be in a favorable location in regards to wind conditions which are ever present in the San Fernando Valley during the Spring months.
"It changes the direction of the prevailing wind conditions which is far more similar to traditional beach volleyball conditions," said CSUN Director of Women's Volleyball Jeff Stork. "The expansion will also provide extra space between courts which will be beneficial to our fans and enable us to host other events."
The location of the new facility is also nearer to the center of the campus and will be the closest athletic facility to Matador Hall which houses much of the CSUN coaching staff. It will also raise the visibility of beach volleyball on campus due to the fact that hundreds of CSUN students will walk or ride from the dorms to class directly past the new complex on a daily basis.
Sustainability was also important in the construction of the new facility. The expanded facility will contain a large portion of the sand from the former facility along with a mix of new sand which will provide a state of the art playing surface. The competition nets and fencing surrounding the facility will also be transported from the old facility across campus to the new location.
The second project nearing completion is the Irv Zakheim Entrance Plaza at Matador Field.
In what will create a true open plaza for Matador Baseball fans, the entrance to Matador Field will be completely revamped.
The new entrance plaza will be similar to the entrance to Matador Soccer Field with a permanent ticket booth, lush landscaping and wrought iron gating with CSUN Matadors signage proudly displayed above. The plaza will also have a series of brick pavers displaying the names of CSUN Baseball donors. Protective netting has also been extended around the first base dugout area to enhance the viewing experience.
The plaza will not only provide a gathering place for students and fans before, during and after CSUN Baseball games but will enable the Matador Marketing team to host promotional and fan engagement events. Tickets will not be needed to enter the plaza but are required for bleacher seating around home plate.
"This opens up the floor plan of a great old house, said CSUN Baseball Head Coach Greg Moore. "This is phase one and I'd love to get fans and alums back to enjoy the atmosphere at a barbeque on Aug. 25."
Both significant projects are scheduled to be completed by mid-August.
