Beginning June 25 and running through July 30, CSUN will present its top-10 sports moments from the 2017-18 season.
Today's moment, No. 7, features CSUN Baseball tying a school record with 31 runs in a win over Manhattan.
A day after routing Manhattan 21-5 at Matador Field, CSUN Baseball would top that effort with a hitting display that ranks among the best in program history. The Matadors tied a school record in runs in a 31-5 victory over Manhattan on Feb. 24.
Setting season highs across the board, the Matadors notched 31 runs on 25 hits including 13 extra base hits and six home runs to clinch the weekend series. A total of 15 different Matadors recorded at least one hit while six had multi-hit efforts. The Matadors scored multiple times in seven of eight innings on the day as all 18 batters who stepped to the plate reached base at least once. In addition, 17 of the 18 batters scored at least one run.
CSUN matched its run record established on April 8, 1997 at UC Santa Barbara in a 31-9 triumph. The Matadors also set a new RBI record for a single game with 31 on the afternoon.
Nick Sablock drove in six runs vs. Manhattan
Among the many standouts on the day, senior outfielder Nick Sablock knocked in six runs in the game as he went 4-for-5 with four runs scored and a home run. Junior Joey Cooper went 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI while freshman Brandon Bohning posted a 3-for-6 day with four RBI, three runs scored and a homer. Seniors Riley Conlan and Alex Hull, junior Trevor Casanova and freshman Ben Martz also went yard in the game.
Breaking a 2-2 tie in the second inning, the Matadors scored four runs in the bottom of the second highlighted by a Joey Cooper two-run triple. From there, the Matadors would add four runs in the third and four more in the fourth inning.
After CSUN was shutout in the fifth, the Matadors went back on the attack with a six-run sixth inning as Martz and Conlan hit back-to-back home runs.
The Matadors picked up four more runs in the seventh but saved their best for last in the eighth with a seven-run frame. Reserves Kyle Barret, Wesley Ghan-Gibson and Joey Czarske all joined the party with RBI hits.
The Matadors went on to sweep Manhattan, outscoring the Jaspers 57-11 over the weekend. The 57 runs in the series were the third-most runs scored in a series of three or four games in program history. The Matadors also scored 30 or more runs for just the third time ever.
CSUN's offense would continue to tear up opposing pitching staffs throughout the season. The Matadors scored 10 or more runs nine different times in 2018, winning all nine of those games. The squad also racked up 10 or more hits in 15 games and multiple-home runs in 16 contests. The Matadors finished tops in the Big West Conference in home runs (65), extra base hits (179), total bases (880) and slugging percentage (.429).
