CSUN Athletics Mourns the Passing of Howard Garcia

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A beloved member of the CSUN Athletics Department for over 30 years, Howard Garcia passed away Jan. 1.
Garcia, who retired from CSUN in August of 2017, was the Events Manager for Matador Athletics for nearly 30 years and spent a total of 35 years on the Northridge campus.
He joined the CSUNÂ staff in 1982 as an Instructional Support Technician and Youth Summer Camp Director. He served in both capacities until the 1990 season when the Intercollegiate Athletic Department split as the Matadors made their transition to NCAA Division I status.
Since becoming the Events Manager, Garcia served in numerous post-season tournaments and championship events hosted by the Matadors, with the most recent being the 2008 NCAA Track & Field Western Regional and the 2005 NCAA Men's Soccer Championships.
Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education in 1980 from Long Beach State, where he played baseball for three years.
After attaining his degree, Garcia coached baseball for two years (1980-82) at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, Calif. He also served as a substitute teacher during his tenure at Edison.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
